C3 / IU-RESCAT / Universitat Rovira i Virgili

Tarragona, Spain (Headquarters)

Enric Aguilar Principal Investigator (PI)

Professor and director of IU-RESCAT, as well as a senior researcher at the Centre for Climate Change (C3) of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. He specializes in the quality and homogeneity of climate data and climate change indices.

He maintains a long track record of collaboration with the WMO (development of the Competency Framework for the Provision of Climate Services). Currently, he is the Project Coordinator of EMPOANDES and is part of the reference editorial team of the International Journal of Climatology.

Javier Sigró Principal Investigator (PI)

Francisco Javier Sigró Rodríguez is a professor at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), linked to the Department of Geography. His research profile focuses on climatology: climate variability and change, homogenization and quality control of climate series, historical data rescue, and detection/characterization of climate change.

In teaching, he teaches or has taught subjects such as Sustainability and Climate Change, Climate Variability and Change, and Geography subjects at the undergraduate and doctoral levels. He has participated as an external expert in WMO projects.

Antoni Domenech

Antoni Domènech is a Serra-Hunter Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, where he is also part of the University Research Institute in Sustainability, Climate Change and Energy Transition (IU-RESCAT) and the Centre for Climate Change (C3).

He is co-principal investigator of the governance work package of the Life eCOadapt50 project on climate adaptation of local economies. He directs doctoral theses in both the Tourism and Leisure and the City, Territory and Sustainable Planning doctoral programs, and has actively participated in multiple competitive research and transfer projects at the regional, national, and European levels, focusing on sustainable tourism, territorial planning, climate change adaptation, and the collaborative economy.

Anna Boqué

Dr. Anna Boqué is a visiting professor in the Department of Geography at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and a member of the Centre for Climate Change (C3) research group. Her work focuses on the development of Climate Services and the generation of climate information useful for decision-making in sectors such as railway infrastructure, tourism, and food security.

She has actively participated in several international and national research projects, such as INDECIS, EduClimAD, IMPETUS, MiRETS, EMPOCLIM, and TURLIT-ODS, oriented towards climate change adaptation, risk management, and environmental education. Furthermore, she has led training and capacity-building programs in these areas in both academic contexts —from school to university education— and professional environments.

She stands out for integrating co-creation processes in the design and application of Climate Services, promoting collaboration between science and society. She has a special interest in the development of Climate Services applied to coastal activities, combining meteorological and oceanic variables to improve coastal management and resilience.

Jon Xavier Olano Project Manager

Sociologist with a PhD and professor at URV and UOC, with a background focused on applied and interdisciplinary research.

His work focuses on the impact of climate change on cultural heritage, tourism, and the development of climate services for different sectors. He collaborates as an external expert for the WMO, participating in international projects in South America and Africa.

He is also currently the Project Manager of empoandes.eu, combining research, management, and knowledge transfer.

Caterina Cimolai

Caterina Cimolai is a predoctoral researcher at C3-URV with a background in Environmental Sciences. Her work focuses on the study of climate change and territorial planning, specializing in heatwaves, the urban heat island (UHI) effect, geospatial analysis, and adaptation processes, especially in urban environments.

She has experience in remote sensing, climate data processing, and the co-creation of indicators for the design of adaptation strategies. She also has a background in public management and is particularly interested in the integration of scientific evidence into decision-making processes, promoting the development of data-driven public policies.

Guillermo Closa

Guillermo Closa Clarià is a predoctoral researcher at C3/IU-RESCAT, a chemical engineer from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, with a master's degree in Sustainability (UNESCO Chair at UPC) and a postgraduate degree in Environment and Development from the University of Havana, where he obtained the category of principal teaching staff.

His research focuses on the integrated modeling of the local energy system for the municipal energy transition, a line in which he is developing his doctoral thesis. He participates as a member of the TAB of the LIFE eCOadapt50 project, in climate change adaptation actions at the territorial level, in continuity with his experience in the agroforestry sector in the Argentine Chaco. In addition, he has worked in education for sustainability programs in both formal and non-formal settings.
